A Meatless World

I’m considering becoming a vegetarian.

Okay, let me stop you right there because I know all you carnivores out there are saying, “What? Is she crazy? Give up meat? Blasphemous!”

I know, right? But here’s the deal. Lately the taste of meat has been off-putting to me and lately I’ve been eating smaller and smaller portions of the stuff. I think it’s due to mid-life hormonal changes when our bodies shift gears during the wonderful world of our 40s.

Chicken, turkey, beef and pork are not as high on my food list as they once were.  Plus, my husband has gotten into some crazy lamb phase, where he’s always pushing lamb chops on the family. Well, let me tell ya, the kids and I are not big lamb fans, but we try to humor him and let him get his lamb “jollies” on from time to time. But on those nights I prefer a big bowl of cereal.

My husband is the weekend cook, and he’s a pretty good cook for the most part. But if I’m going to eat meat, it has to be thoroughly cooked. And the husband seems to think undercooked is thoroughly cooked. He says it’s tender and juicy that way, I say it’s gross and raw. But he’s been programmed by all his corporate lunches and gatherings where they like rare meat. He didn’t used to be that way. But he’s that way now, and he’s trying to convert me. Unfortunately, it’s a conversion that will NEVER happen. Especially since I’m considering leaving the meat phase of my life, altogether.

But let’s get real. I’m a die-hard hamburger lover. The only meat for which I have not decreased my intake. Love them burgers. Especially with huge steak fries on the side. Yum! So I guess that settles it. With my lust for burgers, I won’t be entering the meatless world any time soon. I guess I’ll have to abandon my vegetarian delusions, and chalk it up to a temporary mid-life meat crisis.

Talk to me, is anyone else having a mid-life change of appetite?
