A Meatless World

I’m considering becoming a vegetarian.

Okay, let me stop you right there because I know all you carnivores out there are saying, “What? Is she crazy? Give up meat? Blasphemous!”

I know, right? But here’s the deal. Lately the taste of meat has been off-putting to me and lately I’ve been eating smaller and smaller portions of the stuff. I think it’s due to mid-life hormonal changes when our bodies shift gears during the wonderful world of our 40s.

Chicken, turkey, beef and pork are not as high on my food list as they once were.  Plus, my husband has gotten into some crazy lamb phase, where he’s always pushing lamb chops on the family. Well, let me tell ya, the kids and I are not big lamb fans, but we try to humor him and let him get his lamb “jollies” on from time to time. But on those nights I prefer a big bowl of cereal.

My husband is the weekend cook, and he’s a pretty good cook for the most part. But if I’m going to eat meat, it has to be thoroughly cooked. And the husband seems to think undercooked is thoroughly cooked. He says it’s tender and juicy that way, I say it’s gross and raw. But he’s been programmed by all his corporate lunches and gatherings where they like rare meat. He didn’t used to be that way. But he’s that way now, and he’s trying to convert me. Unfortunately, it’s a conversion that will NEVER happen. Especially since I’m considering leaving the meat phase of my life, altogether.

But let’s get real. I’m a die-hard hamburger lover. The only meat for which I have not decreased my intake. Love them burgers. Especially with huge steak fries on the side. Yum! So I guess that settles it. With my lust for burgers, I won’t be entering the meatless world any time soon. I guess I’ll have to abandon my vegetarian delusions, and chalk it up to a temporary mid-life meat crisis.

Talk to me, is anyone else having a mid-life change of appetite?

  1. Just so you know, you are still KUKIE!! You string us along on the vegetarian talk, just to say it was a “mid-life crisis”!! Well, I do feel ya on the meat being gross. As you know, I’ve been off the moo and oink for several years now, but chicken on the bone sometimes grosses me out. Handling raw meat has become such a turn off. Anyhoo, I go in out of different mid-life crisis situations. Currently I just want to wear jeans or sweats to work daily. I can, so I do. Even though I don’t feel it’s so appropriate.

  2. Yes, Starla, I know about the Kukie deal. Some things never change. Also, I feel you on the handling raw meat situation.

I like to cook and try out new recipes, but lately handling raw meat has become yuckville. Even the smell is a turn off. But I think it’s just a phase I’m in that’ll be over soon.

Your jeans and sweats crisis is hilarious and so unlike you for work. Looks like you’re in rebellion dress mode. I have a lot of “rebellion from the norm” modes so I say, “More power to you!!!”

  3. LOL!!! I am laughing so hard right now. Because a couple of weeks ago, I made Cornish Hens for the boys and I. Well when it was time to season and cook them, I was freaking out, and I could not touch them with out thinking “OMG that is where their little heads belong.” And every time I looked at them I thought they were going to just start walking across the counter. It was really grossing me out. LOL!!!!

Well the only mid life changes I have made is cutting the carbs and sugars. I find that I can eat a bowl of steamed veggies and it taste really good to me.
Getting older is such Big Fun!!!

    • Sharon, you’re having a meat gross out, too? What’s up with us? Why now are we starting to get grossed out by meat? I find it very peculiar and blame it on aging. What else could it be? We blame everything else on aging, so why not meat.

Plus that Cornish hen thing is funny. Are you sure you weren’t drinking multiple glasses of wine while preparing your hens? Why else would you think they’re going to get up and start walking. I’m thinking alcohol was at your hen party. I’m just sayin’. You’re right, getting older is such Big fun!!!!
