When Love Smoothes Your Jagged Edges

Sunday night I was hiding in the bathroom after a heavy day of emotional stress and a full weekend of social events. Friday night was my pot-luck book club meeting—ate too much. Saturday my husband and I attended a surprise party for a friend—ate too much. And Sunday afternoon I went to a Baby Shower and… ate too much, yet again.

Sunday was also one of those days where your spouse is continuously working your nerve to the point where you want to throw him out the window and hope he lands on hard ground instead of the backyard trampoline. (However, we don’t have a backyard trampoline so there’s no possibility of a safe landing.)

Nevertheless, Sunday night I was hiding in the bathroom because it’s the only room in the house where you get 70% privacy——80% if you lock the door. The remaining percentage is stolen by my husband and kids who are endlessly coming to the door knock, knock, knocking; asking what I’m doing; wanting to come in; or begging to use the toilet (as if there aren’t two other bathrooms in the house they could use).

Anyway, I was trying to grab a moment of solitude when I saw five little fingers pushing a note under the door. I rolled my eyes in frustration and hung my head in defeat. The fingers belonged to my youngest son and I was certain it was a harassment note that required action out of me, or he was whining/complaining about his brother, his toys, or his need for a snack. Whatever it was, I was NOT in the mood. So I reached for the note and instead of the inevitable, I read these words written in his eight-year old handwriting:

Mom, I love you a lot. Love, Trevor.

All the frustration of the day and exhaustion from a weekend of events had IMMEDIATELY dissipated into a puddle of boundless love that only a mother can have for her child.

When I least expected it and needed it most, love slid under my bathroom door and made all my jagged edges smooth, and calmed my crazy. This helped me remember that our greatest moments in life are those which seize us by surprise and takes our breath away.

I hope you all are honoring those moments which take your breath away. The more you honor them the more you receive them.

  1. Demetria, that is what I love about our little men, they so love their mothers:)

First, let me say I don’t have a moment to myself unless I am at work or in the bathroom.

But, one of the moments that takes my breath away is when I come home from work. My twins hug and kiss me and ask how was my day at work. Then they take my purse and lunch bag and put them away. Then they say “We missed you”. That is when I realize that everything I have been through or going through is not important.

  2. Oh what a beautiful little blog D- and what a wonderful gift slid under your door. Hoping life calms down soon for BOTH of us. You need to come join me on my patio. I bought a case of wine from my neighbor/ winery near my old house.

    • Thanks, Susan. And yes I plan to come see your new house. I’m excited to see the room decor, since you’re an interior designer and all. Or should I say superwoman–designer by day/writer by night.

  3. Isn’t it funny how little things happen in life, just at the right moment, to put it all back into perspective??
