When I was younger, I loved being on the phone for hours. Couldn’t keep me off it. My siblings and I had numerous telephone fights. Waging war over who’s been on it the most. So today as I’m sitting in my home office, writing, writing, writing, the phone rings. It interrupts my thought process and breaks up my flow. I sit and listen to it ring and think back to those days—how I used to love the phone—and can’t even fathom it now. Now I am so completely the opposite it’s pathetic.
The phone for me is a source of energy drain. I can do brief, to-the-point calls—get in, get out. But I’m mentally unequipped for chit-chatting long periods of time. You’re more likely to receive an email or text from me before I’ll pick up the phone and call you. There’s just too much to do in life and no time to do it. And when there’s down time, the last thing I want to do is spend it on the phone. Therefore, I’ve been branded by family and friends as the woman who takes forever to return phone calls, and the woman who won’t answer her phone. All are well deserved labels, I admit. Most times I don’t even turn on my cell phone.

But it’s not my fault if others like to chit chat and I don’t—not on the phone anyways. Let’s go hang out. Let’s share a movie. Let’s laugh over lunch. But don’t imprison me on the phone. Though there are some exceptions. Long lost friends you haven’t heard from in years, or people you like to vent with. These require longer conversations. But even these are spread out enough so I can mentally give them proper attention. So there it is. I’m really not a phone buff. Are you?
LOL! That is so true back in the day you would fight to use the phone.
But now that I am older if it is not family or true friends calling.
I now look at the phone and think I will call them back when I feel like talking. After working all day who has time to sit on the phone for hours.
Ok,Demetria I know why I get those 2 hour long calls from you every so often. LOL!!!!
Sharon, glad to see I’m not the only one who had phone fights back then. Thanks for your comments.
My phone time was limited back in the day…so my dad thought (bless his heart–I miss him so much). As for today, I still enjoy my occasional phone time with close friends, although it’s not often at all…Dee Dee!!
Lucky for you, Starla, you didn’t endure phone wars. And as always, I appreciate your comments.
Hi Demetria!
Thanks for visiting Mindful Banter! It’s great to meet you. I remember those days hanging out on the phone all day with my friends. I’m still a talker, but I’ve come to value my time much more. I will often completely disconnect from the phone so I can stay focused on my writing or spend time with family.
Roxanne, thanks for visiting. The phone will kill a great writing session every time. For me, it’s necessary to disconnect while writing. Thanks for your comments.
I remember those phone days. I use to even fall asleep on the phone. Well today at the ripe old age of 46 I know life is to short to sit on the phone or even watch TV. God has put us here to do much bigger things!
Oh my God! Brenda, I completely forgot about the falling asleep on the phone deal. Those late, late night calls got me every time. I remember often waking up with the phone receiver (before cell phones) tangled in my sheets the next morning. Knowing full well we had no business being on the phone in wee hours of the morning falling asleep on our callers. I had to sneak and do those calls. My mom would’ve killed me and nearly have. Thanks for the reminder down memory lane. I do recall you being one of my partners in crime with whom I wasted numerous hours on the phone. Thanks for your comments.
